The Alliance of Media Organizations (AMO) and Sandya Eknaligoda, wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, yesterday handed over a petition to UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Neil Buhne asking the Organization to expedite its efforts in finding the missing journalist.
The Media organization said that though one year had passed since the disappearance of the Lanka e News journalist no headway had been made by the local authorities.
The Alliance said the government had at first accused Prageeth Eknaligoda of hiding but had done nothing even after it was evident that he was not. “The government has a responsibility to find those who are missing and they are not doing so,” the AMO said.
Chief Editor of the Lanka newspaper, Chandana Sirimalwatta who was also present said this was a question of whether the government wanted to find Prageeth Eknaligoda.
‘Prageeth creates stronger self image’
As one year was completed since the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda yesterday, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya paid tribute to him stating he was a philosopher who strived to put the country which was struggling without a vision on the right track.
Mr. Jayasuriya said in a statement that Pragaeeth foresaw the dangers which the neutral forces had to suffer by keeping silent on the political challenges they had to face.
“Prageeth was trilingual, a cartoonist, a poet and a person who was able to manage cyber space effectively to disclose large scale corruption which hampered society, he said.
He said Eknaligoda attacked those who had to be attacked fearlessly and was a journalist who even went into the extent of telling fellow journalists that they were in the wrong camp.
