ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has approved to amend the Muslim Marraige and Divorce Act (MMDA), a statement said.

A Government Information Department statement said that amendments will be brought on the minimum age of marriage, how marriages are registered and consent to marriage.
 
The changes are being brought following calls from the Muslim community and human rights activists, the government said.
 
The cabinet of ministers had approved a proposal to seek the advice of the Legal Draftsman to prepare a bill, the statement said.
 
Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister M. H. A. Haleem and Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Atukorale had made the joint proposal to the cabinet. (Colombo/August21/2019)
