South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR), a regional, democratic network of human rights defenders expresses its deep concern over the declaration of state of emergency for 30 days by the government of the Maldives on 5 November 2015 and the repercussions of the same such as curtailment of civil and political liberties of the citizens. SAHR firmly urges the revoking of the state of emergency to restore the rule of law.
SAHR regrets that lack of an independent judiciary, of respect for fair trial rights and procedural safeguards for the right to liberty, a climate of impunity for attacks on civil society, and oppression of political dissent have derailed the country from its democratic course adopted in 2008. SAHR calls upon the Government, the political opposition and all major stakeholders to engage in a meaningful dialogue in order to prevent further intensification of the political tensions and ensure that the people of the Maldives can enjoy democratic governance, and all fundamental freedoms without fear.
