Promoting Democracy, Upholding Human Rights

Rights activists today staged an hour-long human chain protest at the Shahbagh Square against doctors’ strike at Bangladesh Medical College at Dhanmondi, calling their act as a gesture of defying professional ethics and extreme negligence to patients’ sufferings, reports news agency BSS.

“They took patients hostages by their illegal and unethical strike,” said a statement issued by Sachetan Nagorik Samaj after scores of people joined the demonstration with banners and festoons in front of the National Museum.

The protestors said when the medical practice is universally regarded as a great noble profession with everyone considering doctors as their near and dear ones.

But, they said, a “handful of physicians” were trying to capitalize the patients’ sufferings to press home their illegal and unjustified demands at Bangladesh Medical College.

Recently, the authority transferred a medical officer of the Orthopedic Department of Bangladesh Medical College of Dhanmandi to Uttra Adhunik Medical College in line with the service rule of the two facilities, run by a single management.

But a group of doctors enforced a strike protesting the transfer while according to a Nagotrik Samaj statement they were joined by some outsiders.
