South Asians for Human Rights

Promoting Democracy, Upholding Human Rights

South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) a regional network of human rights defenders welcomes the newly appointed Interim Government of Bangladesh and hope that it will prioritise the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh for a productive and constructive social contract. SAHR commends the success of the mass movement led by students that led to the resignation of the Prime Minister and the dissolution of the parliament.

At this time, SAHR calls on the new Interim Government of Bangladesh to ensure justice and accountability for the violent incidents that took place in the past few weeks and ensure non-recurrence of revenge acts that would further escalate loss of life and destruction paving way to lawlessness. SAHR believes that it is crucial that the Interim Government resolutely restores respect for and protection of democratic values as well as promote and protect rights and freedoms of the people including right to life, freedoms of expression, association and assembly.  SAHR calls on the people of Bangladesh to cooperate positively with the new Interim Government towards creating stability of the country. SAHR further advocates the governments of the region and the international community to provide proactive assistance to the newly appointed Interim Government of Bangladesh at this fragile and transitional moment and support a fair and free election at the earliest.
