A file picture shows ex-defence minister Nazim waving as he is brought to court by the Maldives correctional service: “Contraband” has been found in the special unit holding Nazim and the other high-profile inmates in Himmafushi prison.

A search of the special protection unit (SPU) in Himmafushi Asseyri prison currently holding some high-profile inmates including two former defence ministers has yielded ‘contraband’, correctional service said Wednesday.

Former defence ministers Colonel retired Mohamed Nazim and Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, former MP Ahmed Nazim and religiously conservative Adhaalath Party president Sheikh Imran Abdulla are being held at the SPU in Himmafushi prison.

Prisons commissioner Mohamed Husham told Haveeru confirmed that “contraband” had been found during the search but refused to disclose details. But Haveeru has found that prison guards had found a mobile phone inside the unit.

Nazim, who had served as the defence minister under former president Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, is serving an 11-year prison sentence for smuggling and possessing dangerous weapons.

Tholhath is serving 10 years for the arbitrary arrest and subsequent detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed while he was defence minister in 2012.

Former Dhiggaru MP Nazim is serving 25 years after being convicted of graft while Sheikh Imran facing charges for inciting violence has been remanded until his trial.
