The government would relax or totally remove the ‘Emergency Regulations’ (ER) when it considers the regulations are not necessary to protect the law and order, cabinet spokesman Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said yesterday.
He told the weekly cabinet news briefing yesterday that the government did not intend to impose the ER for even an hour after it is deemed unnecessary, but at the moment the government needs to impose it for the smooth enforcement of the law. “It is true that the country is enjoying the dividends of peace following the crushing of terrorism. But do not forget there are remnants of the LTTE still active and the issue of terrorism has not been fully addressed,’ Minister Yapa stressed.
